OUTREACH EFFORTS

The period covered: February 1, 2009 through January 31, 2010. 
 
I. JOB FAIR 
 
New South Radio, Inc. hosted the “Fresh Start” Career Expo at the McGowan Work Force Training Center at Holmes Community College in Ridgeland, MS on Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 10:00am – 4:00pm. A total of 31 other employers participated including: Backyard Burgers, Belhaven College, Belk’s Clinique Northpark, Brown Bottling, CEFCO, Chick Fil A, Citizen’s National Bank, Comcast, Dept of Homeland Security, Express Personnel, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Gray Daniels Automobiles, Holmes Community College, Next Step Program (GED) of Holmes Community College, Jackies’s International, M&F Bank, Madison County WIN Job Center, Mazzio’s, McClain’s Sonic, Mid-South Rehabilitation, MS Army National Guard, Region 8, Southern Farm Bureau, Sprint Mart, University of Mississippi Medical Careers, US Army Recruiting, US Marine Recruiting, US Navy Recruiting, US Secret Services, Verizon Wireless, and Yazoo-Valley Electric.
 
The job fair was organized and promoted (512 commercials) on all four stations (WJKK-FM, WYOY-FM, WUSJ-FM and WIIN-AM).   Employees of all stations had significant participation in the job fair.
During the “Fresh Start” Career Expo, department heads and managers were on hand to interview prospective sales and administrative candidates. John Anthony, Program Director and On-Air Personality WJKK, Russ Williams, Program Director and On-Air Personality WUSJ, Zak Tyler, Program Director and On-Air Personality WYOY, Gwen Rakestraw, General Manager, Bill Rakestraw, General Sales Manager, Nancy Fletcher, Local Sales Manager, and Fisher Alexander, Production Director and Program Director WIIN were available to discuss job openings for air talent, production and promotion.
 
WJKK, WYOY, and WUSJ each provided live remote broadcasts from the job fair encouraging people to attend. In addition, the following personnel were on hand at the job fair taking applications and answering questions about careers in radio:
 
Carson – On Air Personality for WYOY-FM
EJ Rivers – On Air Personality for WJKK-FM
Scott Steele - On Air Personality for WUSJ-FM
Nate West – On Air Personality for WYOY-FM
 
As a result of the “Fresh Start” Career Expo, over 245 job applications were received by the Radio People and other participants. According to employer participant surveys over 32 job offers were made on site and an additional 34 jobs positions would be filled after review of applications received. 
 
II. SCHOLARSHIP
 
In June 2009, “The Radio People of Jackson Scholarship” was awarded to Miller Faulk. Faulk is a freshman at Holmes Community College, majoring in Business Administration and Marketing. “The Radio People of Jackson Scholarship” was established with Holmes Community College in January 2009 and awards $500.00 annually to a deserving student pursuing a career in Communications or Marketing.
 
 
 
 
III. TRAINING
 
On December 2, 2009 management personnel of New South Radio, Inc. attended an EEO training course. The course was facilitated by Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, LLP, of Birmingham, Alabama. The course title was “Developments at the EEOC: Times They Are A Changin’, and the following people attended the training: Bill Rakestraw, Gwen Rakestraw, and Nancy Fletcher.
